Daniel Carter is a farmer, professor, coach, husband, and the father of two boys. He has been teaching environmental and community development related courses at the University of the South for the past nine years after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in political science. Prior to academia, Daniel spent ten years as a county government consultant with the University of Tennessee’s Institute for Public Service advising rural elected officials on legal and technical issues. Daniel is a second generation farmer that owns and operates Carter Farms in Jasper, TN. Daniel has served on numerous boards of conservation and community development organizations and is currently chair of an initiative to protect open space in the Chattanooga area as part of the Thrive Regional Partnership.
